On 21–22 October, a two-day training seminar dedicated to Turkmenistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and its significance for the development of the private sector was held in Ashgabat. The event was organized by the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The seminar brought together representatives of government agencies, the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan, domestic companies operating in various sectors of the economy, and international experts. The main focus was on the progress of preparations for WTO accession, the potential benefits of membership, and the challenges it may occur for domestic businesses.
An important part of the event was an open dialogue between government representatives, the business community, and international experts. Participants discussed practical issues related to Turkmen companies’ access to foreign markets, compliance with international standards, and enhancing businesses’ readiness for increased competition.
Particular attention was given to the export potential of domestic businesses. Discussions focused on improving product quality, meeting the requirements of international markets, and strengthening the position of Turkmen producers in international trade.
Following the seminar, participants emphasized the need for continued cooperation between the government and the private sector in preparing Turkmenistan for WTO accession. Taking entrepreneurs’ views and practical experience into account is essential for identifying economic development priorities and shaping approaches to the upcoming negotiations.
