Turkmenistan–Kazakhstan Business Forum: Boosting Regional Trade and Economic Cooperation

26 Iýun 2026 г.

On 24 June 2026, the Turkmenistan–Kazakhstan Business Forum took place in Astana, culminating in the signing of bilateral agreements between business representatives and government bodies from both countries. At first glance, such events form part of routine business diplomacy. However, against the backdrop of the ongoing transformation of Eurasian trade routes, such meetings take on added significance for the development of economic cooperation in Central Asia.

Why is this important?

Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan remain key players in the regional logistics system.

Turkmenistan possesses strategically important infrastructure, including the seaport of Turkmenbashi and transport routes linking Central Asia with the markets of the Middle East and South Asia.

Kazakhstan has the largest economy in Central Asia and plays a vital role in the international transport corridors linking China, Europe and the countries of the Caspian region.

Therefore, any new agreements between businesses in the two countries may extend far beyond the scope of individual contracts.

Which areas of cooperation look the most promising?

Logistics and Transport

In recent years, countries in the region have been paying particular attention to the development of trans-Caspian routes. An increase in freight traffic across the Caspian Sea could create further opportunities for transport companies, logistics operators and exporters. Where signed agreements relate to the transport sector, their implementation could help to reduce delivery times and expand export opportunities for businesses.

Agricultural Sector

Kazakhstan remains one of the region’s largest producers of grain. For Turkmen businesses, cooperation in the processing, storage and transport of agricultural produce could open up further opportunities for trade development and joint projects.

Industrial cooperation

Rather than simply trading goods, countries are increasingly moving towards the joint production of goods with higher added value. This approach helps to create new jobs and boost the competitiveness of regional companies in foreign markets.

What do businesses gain?

For entrepreneurs, such forums are important not only as a platform for signing agreements.

They enable them to:

•    find new partners;

•    gain access to new markets;

•    keep abreast of regulatory changes;

•    assess promising investment projects.

This is particularly relevant for small and medium-sized enterprises, which often face a lack of direct contacts in foreign markets.

Regional Context

In recent years, Central Asia has shown a steady trend towards strengthening intra-regional cooperation. Whilst ten years ago the focus was on cooperation with external partners, today the development of trade links within the region itself is becoming increasingly important. Against this backdrop, the Turkmenistan–Kazakhstan Business Forum can be seen as part of a broader trend towards the formation of an integrated economic space in Central Asia.

What next?

The key indicator of the forum’s success will not be the number of documents signed, but their practical implementation.

For business, concrete results are important:

•    the launch of joint projects;

•    growth in mutual trade;

•    development of logistics routes;

•    the emergence of new investment initiatives.

If the agreements are implemented in full, the forum could mark another step towards strengthening economic ties between Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan and enhancing Central Asia’s role in international trade.
