Uzbekistan Expands Water Capacity on the Border with Turkmenistan
Uzbekistan plans to increase the capacity of the Tuyamuyun hydro-engineering complex on the Amu Darya River, located on the border with Turkmenistan, by 1 billion cubic metres of water. The project is of direct importance for Turkmenistan, as the facility plays a significant role in regulating river flows and forming a strategic freshwater reserve for the population and agriculture in border regions.
The expansion will help ensure more stable water supply for approximately 1.2 million hectares of agricultural land and strengthen overall water management in the Amu Darya basin. As part of the Uzbekistan–2030 development strategy, large-scale modernisation of irrigation infrastructure is also planned, including the concreting of more than 13,000 kilometres of canals and the creation of additional water reserves, contributing to greater predictability and sustainability of water resources in the Turkmen–Uzbek transboundary basin.
