UN Group of Friends of Neutrality Expands to 29 Countries
In 2025, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan and Eswatini joined the UN Group of Friends of Neutrality for Peace, Security and Sustainable Development. With these new members, the initiative—launched by Turkmenistan—now brings together 29 states, reflecting the growing international interest in neutrality as an effective instrument for building trust and promoting global stability.
The Group of Friends of Neutrality serves as a multilateral platform under the auspices of the United Nations, facilitating dialogue on the practical application of neutrality principles in conflict prevention, humanitarian engagement and the advancement of sustainable development. The initiative was established in 2020, while the first ministerial meeting was held in Ashgabat in December 2022.
The next meeting of the Group of Friends of Neutrality is scheduled for February 2026. The continued expansion of the Group underscores the increasing relevance of neutrality in international relations as a constructive and pragmatic approach to peace and security.
