Turkmenistan Assumes the Chairmanship of the CIS

02.01.26

As of 1 January 2026, Turkmenistan has officially taken over the chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States, succeeding Tajikistan. President Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasised that Ashgabat regards this chairmanship as a mark of trust and recognition of the country’s contribution to the development of the CIS, and intends to use it to fully realise the organisation’s potential. During its tenure, Turkmenistan will present a concept reflecting strategic approaches to strengthening intergovernmental cooperation and addressing the most pressing needs of member states. The country previously held the CIS chair in 2019 and now aims once again to actively promote initiatives and foster closer collaboration among its partners.
