Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan Upgrade Caspian Transport Corridor
Kazakhstan will expand the “Zhanaozen — Turkmenistan border” highway to four lanes, with reconstruction of the 164-km section leading to the Temir-Baba border crossing scheduled for completion in 2026.
At the same time, Turkmenistan is advancing major infrastructure projects on the corresponding route. Construction of a 354-metre bridge over Garabogaz Kol on the Turkmenbashi — Garabogaz — Kazakhstan border highway is nearing completion and is expected to open in 2026.
Work is also under way on a new 225-km four-lane motorway linking Turkmenbashi with Kazakhstan, designed as a continuation of the Ashgabat — Turkmenbashi high-speed highway. The Garabogaz customs post has also undergone large-scale modernisation to accelerate freight clearance.
The coordinated upgrades on both sides of the border strengthen the Caspian corridor’s role as a strategic transit route connecting the Gulf states and India with Russia and Europe, while creating new economic opportunities for the border regions.
