Ashgabat Joins the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities
Ashgabat has officially become a member of UNESCO’s Global Network of Learning Cities, joining 72 newly admitted cities from 46 countries. The membership certificate was presented during a ceremony at the Ashgabat City Municipality.
UNESCO’s decision recognises the Turkmen capital’s progress in promoting lifelong learning and creating opportunities for education at all ages. This year, 11 capital cities joined the network, including Cairo, Ankara, Lisbon, Riyadh, Hanoi and Buenos Aires.
With the latest additions, the Global Network now includes 425 cities across 91 countries, representing nearly 500 million people. UNESCO also noted that 12 countries, including Turkmenistan, joined the initiative for the first time in 2025.
Established in 2013, the Global Network of Learning Cities brings together communities where learning is embedded in daily life, in schools, workplaces, libraries, museums and public spaces.
